How to Prevent Scratches on Acrylic Sheets?
If you’ve ever found faint scratches on your acrylic (PMMA) project—whether a retail display or home decor—you know the frustration. Most scratches aren’t accidental; they come from improper handling, cleaning, or storage. After 8+ years working with acrylic, I’m sharing practical, no-nonsense steps to keep sheets scratch-free, with key technical details.
Acrylic is softer than glass (Mohs hardness 2-3 vs. glass’s 5.5), so tiny abrasive particles easily leave micro-scratches. Your first defense: keep the PE/PET protective film (0.05mm thick) on until final installation—even during cutting or drilling. Our tests show this reduces scratch risk by 80% during fabrication.
Cleaning is the top cause of avoidable scratches. Skip paper towels (wood fibers act like sandpaper) and harsh cleaners (ammonia, acetone, or ≥10% isopropyl alcohol). Instead, remove dust with a 300gsm static-free microfiber cloth, then wipe fingerprints with a 1% dish soap + 99% distilled water solution (tap water leaves scratch-causing mineral deposits). Wipe in a single direction, not circles.
When transporting, never drag acrylic across hard surfaces. Use a soft foam pad (density ≥30kg/m³) and carry edge-on. For storage, stack sheets with acid-free tissue or foam between them, in a climate-controlled space (15-25℃, 40-60% humidity) to avoid warping and friction scratches.
For processing: Use a 60-80 tooth carbide-tipped blade (10-15° hook angle) for table saws; keep the film on and use 80-90W power for laser cutting (6mm acrylic). Edge-polish with a 3000-grit diamond wheel to prevent rough edges from scratching.
For high-traffic areas, choose hard-coated acrylic (2H hardness, Mohs 4-5 per ASTM D3363)—we supplied these to a theme park, with no visible scratches after 6 months of heavy use.
Minor scratches (micro-scratches) can be buffed with a 3-step acrylic polish (800/1200/2000 grit). Deep scratches (>0.1mm) need professional repair to avoid making them worse.
Preventing acrylic scratches is about practical steps: protect the film, use the right tools, and handle intentionally. A little preparation saves time, money, and frustration.
